Briefs filed to support transgender student's lawsuit

Three "friends of the court" briefs have been filed in support of a transgender student's lawsuit against Palatine-Schaumburg High School District 211 seeking unrestricted access to a girls locker room at Palatine High School.

The briefs support senior Nova Maday's appeal of a prior denial of her request for a preliminary injunction against the requirement that she always use a private changing area in the locker room, according to her legal representatives at the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois.

One brief is from 12 civil and human rights groups arguing the denial misinterprets the Illinois Human Rights Act.

The second is from eight medical organizations saying social transition is a critical part of a transgender person's medical care.

The third brief was filed by the Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, sharing the school experiences of eight current and recent transgender students.
