Tuition up for CLC students for fifth straight year

The College of Lake County board of trustees has approved a $3-per-credit-hour increase in tuition and student fees for the next school year.

Students in the fall will pay $141 per credit hour, up from the current rate of $138. Of that cost, $119 is tuition and $22 is student fees. Tuition will increase from the current $115 rate, while student fees will drop by $1 from $23.

Board Chairman Richard Anderson said the drop in students fees is because the account ran a slight surplus this year.

This is the fifth year in a row CLC has increased tuition. Compared to the $112 per-credit-hour charge for tuition and fees in 2013-14, the cost will be up 29 percent in 2017-18.

"We have been getting less and less money from the state," Anderson said. "And there is a lot of uncertainty with this being an election year and there being predictions that the state might only pass a six-month budget."

Anderson said the board has an unwritten policy against approving large tuition increases and prefers smaller increases of $2, $3 or $4.

CLC is not alone when it comes to raising tuition and fees for next year. Student costs at Oakton Community College is set to rise to about $148 from $136.25 next year as part of a two-year increase plan passed by the board of trustees in December 2015.

Harper College students will pay $148.75 per credit hour starting in the summer 2018 semester, $6.25 per credit hour more than they are paying now. The college board approved the boost last month.

The McHenry Community College board raised student costs to $123.75 from $121 per credit hour last month.

Starting in the fall semester, Waubonsee Community College students will pay $128 per credit hour, up $2 from the current rate.

The College of DuPage board of trustees usually determine students costs at its March meeting. That will be later this month.

Anderson said he likes where CLC compare to the other area community colleges.
