How much snow got removed from Chicago Executive Airport runways?
Keeping driveways clear was tough enough during February's heavy snowstorm, which dropped more than a foot on parts of the Chicago area.
Now imagine clearing acres of runway to help airplanes land safely.
That was job of Chicago Executive Airport during the recent 10-inch snowfall. Managers of the runways owned by Wheeling and Prospect Heights calculated just how much snow their workers removed.
They came up with a figure of 1,964,605 cubic feet, which equals about 4,914 dump trucks filled to the brim.
Snowplow drivers cleared the runways multiple times to keep the runways safe for airplanes to land.
"To the credit of the hardworking airport snow crews and the thanks of our tenants, Chicago Executive has almost never been shut down because of the inability to clear the runways," airport spokesman Rob Mark said in a news release.
