Hoffman Estates firefighters are investigating the cause of a fire late Tuesday that caused an estimated $50,000 of damage to a single-family home on the 200 block of Pleasant Street.

No injuries were reported, and the residents safely evacuated the one-story home on their own.

Firefighters received the call at 10:57 p.m. and found smoke coming up the basement stairway from a small fire that was quickly extinguished.

The house was found to have no working smoke detectors, officials said.

Hoffman Estates responded with 24 firefighters, while station coverage was provided in their absence by the Elk Grove, Hanover Park, Barrington Countryside and Elgin fire departments.
