Lake in the Hills man dies after being injured in house fire

A 48-year-old Lake in the Hills man died hours after first responders found him injured in an early Sunday house fire, authorities said.

Christopher Laing was one of two men flown in critical condition to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, according to Lake in the Hills police. Emergency personnel responding to Newbury Court about 3:45 a.m. found the men outside the residence, which was engulfed in flames.

Laing was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2 p.m. Sunday, authorities said. An autopsy is expected to be performed by the Winnebago County coroner's office. The condition of the other man is unknown.

The flames were brought under control by 4:47 a.m., officials said. The house was deemed uninhabitable, though a damage estimate was not immediately available, according to the Huntley Fire Protection District.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
