North Central College runner facing drug charges

A North Central College cross-country team member has been charged with drug offenses in connection with a package containing 3.3 pounds of cannabis en route to Naperville, authorities said Wednesday.

Jared Borowsky, 20, a Stevenson High School grad from Buffalo Grove, has been charged with possession of between 500 and 2,000 grams of cannabis and possession of cannabis with intent to deliver, both felonies, Naperville police said. The drugs had a street value of roughly $15,000.

Police and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service began looking into the case when authorities suspected a package headed from California to an address on the 400 block of South Brainard Street in Naperville contained illegal drugs.

On that block at 440 S. Brainard St. is the North Central College Residence Hall/Recreation Center, a collection of dorms built around an indoor track that hosts Division III meets.

North Central College officials confirmed Borowsky is a student enrolled for the winter term. The college's athletics website says he was a freshman member of the 2017 men's cross-country team majoring in athletic training.

According to the cross-country team's website, Borowsky competed in seven races last fall and had six top-five finishes.

He won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin championship meet with a time of 24:41.8 for an 8-kilometer, or 4.97-mile, race. He also came in third at the Midwest Regional Championship with a time of 23:37.9 and finished second in the Division III National Championship with a time of 24:12.44, earning All-America honors.

Police took Borowsky to DuPage County jail after he was arrested Monday by members of the special operations group. His bail was set at $2,500.

Cmdr. Lou Cammiso said the investigation began Saturday when police were alerted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service that a package identified at a mail sorting center as likely containing drugs was heading to their city. Cammiso said the postal service delivered the package, then police followed up at its destination and completed the investigation.
