Could body found in Hawaii be missing Schaumburg woman's?

Hawaiian authorities are trying to identify whether a body found floating in the Wailuku River in Hilo is that of a missing Schaumburg woman.

Kelly Mrowinski, a traveling nurse, was reported as having been swept away by a flash flood on the island of Hawaii more than a month ago. Police stopped looking for Mrowinski after a weeklong search.

Mrowinski, who attended Schaumburg High School from 2004 to 2007, was hiking with a male friend along the Wailuku River near the Piihonua Falls when both were swept away by fast-moving floodwaters on Jan. 26. The man made it to shore.

An autopsy was conducted Tuesday on the body found Saturday, and results should be available by the weekend, said Alan Richmond, public information officer for the Hawaii Police Department.

The remains were severely decomposed, making identification or determining a cause of death difficult.

Mrowinski was an employee of Aya Healthcare, based in San Diego, which sets up short-term contracts that allow its nurses to travel.
