Palatine teen gets probation for burglary

Editor's note: The charges against Brittany Barrett were dismissed.

One of three people charged in a December burglary in Palatine pleaded guilty Monday.

In exchange for pleading guilty to residential burglary, Brittany Barrett, 19, was sentenced to two years of TASC probation. Treatment Alternatives for Safe Communities is an alternative to incarceration for defendants charged with nonviolent offenses. TASC probation includes assessment for substance abuse or mental health issues and treatment, if necessary.

Prosecutors say brothers Eric Mota, 22, and Jack Mota, 20, and Barrett drove to the 100 block of Aldridge Avenue in Palatine about 10 a.m. Dec. 10. They say Barrett knocked on doors until she found an unoccupied house.

She served as a lookout, while Eric Mota used a rock to smash a window and Jack Mota held a curtain, prosecutors said. Jack Mota then served as lookout while Eric Mota entered the house, prosecutors said.

The homeowner returned about that time, prosecutors said, prompting Barrett to honk the horn and drive away with Jack Mota and a fourth person in the car. Eric Mota ran from the house carrying a zipped bag, authorities said. They were caught by police a short time later, prosecutors said.

Jack Mota returns to court March 29, and Eric Mota returns to court April 12.
