Principal says MHS must rises above racial slur

The swift response to an instance of racially insensitive conduct reported Tuesday at Mundelein High School also comes with a challenge to students.

"Whether we want it or not, it's making a statement about our community," Principal Anthony Kroll said Thursday in a brief but powerful address to a hushed gym packed with students during a special all-school assembly. "We are stronger than that. We can't control what particular people say, but we can address it."

He was referring to what everyone knew: A freshman girl was filmed at school wearing six small earrings that, when put together, spelled a racial slur. Full story

Former student charged in Wheaton College burglaries

A former Wheaton College student has been charged with stealing iPhones, a watch and a MacBook from dorm rooms at the school, authorities said Thursday. Sion Park, an 18-year-old freshman, was charged with two counts of residential burglary. Full story

The city of Elgin held its first public meeting for a group designed to coordinate services for the homeless and will start meeting monthly instead of quarterly. Thursday's meeting of the group Community Assessment and Management of People Needing Shelter - known as CAMPS - was attended by about 100 people representing the city, police department, social service agencies, churches, hospitals, mental health organizations, housing groups and more. Two men face gun charges in Aurora

Two men are facing weapons charges after they were found with several guns - one of which was stolen, officials said. Police arrested Cortez H. King, 22, and Parish A. Riley, 25, on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. Riley was also charged with unlawful possession of a stolen firearm that police said was stolen out of DuPage County. Full story

Four accused of stealing from Victoria's Secret in Wheaton

Four people are facing retail theft charges after police said they stole thousands in merchandise from a Wheaton Victoria's Secret store Wednesday. Three suspects reportedly left the store with more than $2,000 in merchandise and fled in a car waiting in the parking lot. The car was later stopped by officers, police said. Full story
