Hoffman Estates man accused of abducting Florida girl

A Hoffman Estates man was behind bars Monday in Bibb County, Georgia, accused of abducting an 11-year-old girl from Orlando, Florida, before his arrest Sunday.

John Peter Byrns, 24, of the 4300 block of North Cottonwood Trail, was awaiting charges in the Bibb County jail, authorities said.

The girl found with Byrnes had been reported as an endangered runaway by the Orange County (Florida) sheriff's office about 9 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Orange County authorities tracked the girl's phone as she traveled north. Just before 2 p.m. Sunday, they contacted the Bibb County sheriff's office as the phone was tracked to the western part of the county, about 70 miles southeast of Atlanta.

At 4 p.m. Sunday, sheriff's deputies met with an FBI agent who assisted in tracking the phone, and they located Byrns' vehicle about an hour later at a Holiday Inn Express hotel. FBI agents and deputies safely recovered the girl and took Byrns into custody after both were found inside a hotel room.

The FBI looked after the girl until she could be reunited with her family, authorities said.
