Mount Prospect mayor endorses District 57 tax hike

Mount Prospect Mayor Arlene Juracek Friday announced that she is endorsing Mount Prospect Elementary District 57's request for a property tax hike. She cited the state' low funding of education, a lower tax rate in District 57 than in neighboring school districts, District 57's low property tax base compared to its neighbors', and the district's spending per pupil, which she said is $3,500 to $7,000 less than its neighbors. Voters will decide in a March 20 referendum whether to approve a 31 percent increase in the limiting rate to 3.60 percent from 2.75 percent of equalized assessed value, which officials say would cost the owner of a home with a market value of $100,000 an extra $238 a year. "A yes vote is an investment in our community that protects our schools and our property values," Juracek said.
