Fremont library board could drop overdue fines

The Fremont Public Library board on Thursday could vote to eliminate fines for overdue books and other materials. The board is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. at the library, 1170 N. Midlothian Road, Mundelein. If officials eliminate fines, it would become the fourth suburban library to take that step. The others are the Vernon Area Public Library in Lincolnshire, the Ela Area Public Library in Lake Zurich and the Algonquin Area Public Library. Overdue fines are a timeless library tradition. But these days, dime-a-day fines don't deter customers from keeping items beyond their due dates, Fremont Library Director Scott Davis has said.
