Two arrested in Aurora on gun and drug charges

Two men were arrested in Aurora in separate incidents on charges of illegal weapon and drug possession Monday.

At around 2 p.m., police saw a car run a stop sign at the intersection of Fenton and Ohio streets, officials said. When they smelled marijuana and told the two men inside the car to step out, Jermaine Bruce, 21, of Joliet, ran from them, reports said. He was taken into custody about a block away, and police found a loaded 9 mm handgun and cocaine on his person, officials said.

Bruce was charged with armed violence, three counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful possession of a controlled substance.

He was also charged with resisting police, and the 33-year-old driver, also from Joliet, received traffic citations, according to officials.

The armed violence charge is a Class-X felony and can carry a heavier penalty upon conviction, police said.

Later that day, police said they arrested Carlos Guzman, 26, after they received a domestic disturbance call at his address in the 100 block of Seminary Avenue. Officers said Guzman had battered a 24-year-old pregnant woman he knew.

After noticing tools used for cleaning guns inside his apartment, police obtained a search waiver and discovered a 9 mm handgun, ammunition, cocaine and cannabis, according to officials.

Guzman was charged with three felonies: unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and aggravated battery to a pregnant female. He was also charged with six misdemeanor charges including domestic battery, unlawful possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia, unlawful possession of ammunition and obstructing police, officials said.
