Police investigating attempted carjacking at Streets of Woodfield

Schaumburg police are investigating an attempted armed carjacking reported in the parking lot of Streets of Woodfield shopping center early Monday afternoon.

The police department received a 911 call from the victim at 1:15 p.m., Sgt. Christy Lindhurst said.

The victim told officers he'd been using his laptop while sitting in the driver's seat of his vehicle with the motor running at the far end of the parking lot, near Frontage Road.

A young man in his late teens or early 20s wearing a surgical mask approached the driver's side window, showed a silver handgun and told the victim to get out of the vehicle, Lindhurst said. Another man of similar age, whose face was partly obscured, approached from the passenger side.

The victim did not exit the vehicle or open the door but stepped on the gas pedal and accelerated away, police said.

The two men who'd approached him ran to a burgundy, older model Chevy Impala that drove onto Frontage Road and then south toward Higgins Road, Lindhurst said.

Police consider there to have been one offender with at least two or possibly three associates.
