Cook County treasurer eliminates online payment fee

Cook County residents will no longer be charged a $1 fee to pay property taxes online.

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas announced Monday that the office is eliminating the charge for property owners paying online with their bank accounts. The move is intended to boost the number of property owners who make electronic payments, Pappas said.

Other features intended to make paying property taxes easier include e-billing to receive tax bills by email and the ability to download bills online.

Property owners paying online with a credit card will still be charged a third-party processing fee. Tax bills are due March 1.
