Rec center to be sold for $3.76 million

The Karger Recreation Center site in Highland Park will be sold by the city for $3.76 million and redeveloped for luxury apartments. City officials on Monday chose Albion Jacobs Highland Park, LLC as the preferred developer for the site east of Route 41 and south of Route 22. The Karger Center was built in 1966 and was leased by the city as a recreation center until 2005. It was identified in a 2014 assessment of city properties as rapidly aging with escalating operating costs. It now houses the Highland Park Community Nursery School and Day Care Center, Rhythmix Gymnastics Program, and Unit 14 Theatre Company. On Jan. 22, city officials will consider a purchase and sale agreement that restricts demolition before June 30, 2019.
