Carl Sandburg's poems put to music in Grayslake

Brooklyn-based musician, composer, singer and songwriter David Nagler sang and read poetry from his album "Carl Sandburg's Chicago Poems" Sunday at the Grayslake Area Public Library.

The new musical project by Nagler sets a variety of Sandburg's poetry to music.

"There are people that are very familiar with Sandburg's work, there are others that know of him, and there are others that have never heard of him," Nagler said. "One of my goals was to appeal to everyone."

Beginning with the classic poem "Chicago," Nagler used a keyboard to introduce the folk orchestral sound to his audience.

The free concert was sponsored by the Friends of the Grayslake Library and is the first concert of the 2018 Winter Concert Series. It also was the library's first event to commemorate the Illinois Bicentennial. Future programming and events will be announced.
