Barrington leader remembers former CN boss

Barrington Village President Karen Darch remembered a railroad executive as "respectful and cordial" after his death last weekend.

Hunter Harrison, the president CEO of railroad giant CSX and former CEO of both Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways, died Saturday.

Harrison was significantly involved in CN's takeover of the EJ&E Railroad, which runs through Barrington.

Darch said despite the village's continued struggle to mitigate the effects of significantly higher train volume through Barrington, she enjoyed working with Harrison during an often-contentious processes.

"I am genuinely saddened by the sudden passing of Mr. Harrison," Darch said. "He was a respectful and cordial individual who took the time to personally meet with myself and Village of Barrington officials as we considered the impact of CN's takeover of the EJ&E. While Mr. Harrison and I did not always agree, I have great respect for him as a businessperson and as an individual. He was, quite simply, a railroading genius who understood how to turn around and manage high-volume railroad enterprises."
