Mundelein High officials developing possible uses for former church

Mundelein High School officials are considering using a former church property adjacent to the school for classrooms, special education programs and administrative offices.

Administrators and school board members are studying options for the former Kirk of the Lakes Presbyterian Church, which the district purchased last year, as part of a long-range planning process for the entire campus.

"The plan is to evaluate the options at the main campus and (the church)," Superintendent Kevin Myers said. "All options are on the table."

A time frame for any construction hasn't been proposed.

"This was one part of the long-range facility planning process," Myers said. "(There is) no specific completion date."

Myers hopes to have a facility plan ready for board review in January or February. A presentation initially was anticipated for this month, but it's been delayed, he said.

Kirk of the Lakes leaders sold the church property at 1500 W. Hawley St. to District 120 for about $1.6 million because congregation membership had declined significantly. The church held its last service in August 2016.

Mundelein High has used the 4.1-acre site, which includes a gymnasium, for dance and cheerleading practices and for staff parking.

Converting the roughly 15,900-square-foot church building for additional school-related uses would require an estimated $2 million in facility upgrades, Myers said. For example, the fire suppression and electrical systems would need updates, he said.
