One in critical condition after Waukegan fire

One person was left in critical condition Monday after a house fire started in a basement on the 1300 block of North Jackson Street in Waukegan, official said.

The Waukegan Fire Department arrived at the scene around 5:30 p.m. A police officer and tenants of the building said one person was trapped in a hot, smoke-filled basement, according to Waukegan Fire.

A female aged between 18 and 30 was rescued and taken to Vista Medical Center East, officials said. She is in critical condition.

There is heavy smoke damage throughout the home and some fire damage to the basement.

The victim was found in an illegal bedroom in the basement. Every bedroom is required to have two ways out, typically with doors and windows. The bedroom did not have a window, according to the department.

The Waukegan Fire Department is currently investigating the cause of the fire.
