Bicentennial flag raised at Libertyville school

Nearly 100 social studies students from Highland Middle School in Libertyville joined local government officials Monday to participate in the Illinois Bicentennial flag raising ceremony.

The flag-raising was one of dozens held across the state Monday at the request of Gov. Bruce Rauner to help kick off a celebration of the state's 200th birthday.

"I'm happy to see that we got our students interested in the history of the state of Illinois," Libertyville Village President Terry Weppler said.

The ceremony opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by social studies teacher James Gasick, and then the Libertyville Fire Department honor guard lowered the American flag. A proclamation to begin the bicentennial celebration was read by Weppler and the bicentennial flag was raised.

Following the ceremony, the honor guard lowered the state flag and raised it at Libertyville village hall, where it will fly through Dec. 3, 2018, as part of the celebration.
