Mundelein police team with restaurant, Girl Scouts to provide Thanksgiving meals

Mundelein police teamed with a local restaurant and Girl Scouts this week to provide 40 needy families with Thanksgiving meals.

As is its annual tradition, Elly's Pancake House donated turkeys to the police department for the charitable project. Additionally, several Girl Scout and Brownie troops from Mundelein Elementary District 75 schools and members of the Mundelein After School Coalition provided canned or boxed ingredients for side dishes.

The families who received the Thanksgiving meal were chosen through contacts developed by the police department, churches and Mundelein schools, which provide names of families who are struggling and might need a helping hand.

In addition to the turkeys donated by Elly's, the MASC and Girl Scouts collect additional items to make complete dinners. Mundelein police officers Rachel Messina and Anastasios Koumantos coordinated the two groups to package the dinners and deliver the food Tuesday.

"It's just a great feeling to give back to the community and help those who need it," Mundelein Public Safety Director Eric Guenther said.
