Crash knocks out power in Cary

Editor's note: The original story has been changed to correct a mistake by authorities in the identification of the person who was cited for the crash.

A crash in Cary knocked out power to parts of two subdivisions for a brief period Tuesday and Wednesday, resulting in a citation for a teenage driver, authorities said.

No one was injured when a car driven by a 17-year-old boy from Island Lake crashed into a utility pole at 11:34 p.m. Tuesday, Cary police Deputy Chief Jim Fillmore said.

The crash took place after the driver became distracted and lost control at Silver Lake Road and Sterling Ridge Boulevard, where the car left the road and struck the pole, Fillmore said.

Police cited the teen with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, Fillmore said.

The crash disrupted electricity to the Sterling Ridge and Patriot Woods subdivisions for about an hour into early Wednesday, Fillmore said.

The outage affected areas around Sterling Ridge Boulevard and Adare Drive, which are only one long block apart, so Fillmore said the outage was “pretty local.”
