Chicago police arrest suspect in Wheeling carjacking, kidnapping
Chicago police on Wednesday morning arrested a man suspected in a carjacking Sunday outside a Walgreens in Wheeling in which a woman and her two children inside the car were kidnapped.
Leon Spektor, a 38-year-old homeless man known to frequent Wheeling and the North Side of Chicago, was arrested about 8:30 a.m. on the 300 block of West Chicago Avenue, Wheeling police said.
Spektor was arrested on a warrant issued in connection with the theft of a car parked outside the Walgreens at 10 N. Milwaukee Ave. about 3:20 p.m. Sunday. A man reported he'd left his vehicle running in the parking lot with his wife and 1-week-old and 3-year-old children inside. When he returned, they were missing and the man could not reach his wife on her cellphone.
The woman and her two children were released unharmed on the 4700 block of West Belmont in Chicago. The woman said the man who hijacked the car also took her cellphone and money, according to police.
Spektor is scheduled to appear at a bond hearing at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rolling Meadows courthouse, police said.
