Round Lake woman charged in 6-year-old son's death

A Round Lake Beach woman is facing two counts of first degree murder and one count of concealment of a homicide in the death of her son, 6-year-old Carl Rice Jr.

On July 2, the Round Lake Beach Police Department was notified of Rice's death, which was originally believed to have occurred in the Chicago Police Department's jurisdiction.

Jamie L. Jones, 29, of the 1800 block of Cedar Lake Road, injured Rice in their home and died from the injuries, according to authorities.

After the incident, Jones took Rice and her other child on a train to Chicago to visit relatives, reports said. Family members noticed Rice was not breathing, and paramedics were called who pronounced Rice to be dead, according to authorities.

On Friday, the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide due to multiple injuries from child abuse.

Jones was arrested Saturday on a Lake County warrant for failure to appear for a battery charge. She was held on that warrant.

Charges were approved by the Lake County state's attorney's office Monday. She is currently being held in Round Lake Beach and will be transported to bond court Tuesday.
