Two police officers rescue disabled man, suffer smoke inhalation in Des Plaines fire

Two Des Plaines police officers rescued a disabled man from a burning building Sunday morning.

The officers were treated for smoke inhalation and minor injuries.

The fire, which occurred at a single-family home in the 300 block of South Westgate Road, is under investigation.

Police officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after 8:30 a.m.

Des Plaines police said they found the rear of the house completely engulfed by flames.

Meeting two senior women on the front porch, the officers were told that the disabled man was still in the house.

Officers entered the home, as smoke was billowing from the building, removed him from the house and moved him to safety.

All other occupants of the house escaped without injury.

The Des Plaines Fire Department, with the assistance of outside agencies, extinguished the fire, the cause of which is unknown at this time.
