Meijer recalls store-brand packaged produce

Meijer is recalling various packaged Meijer-brand produce items due to a potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems.

Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms like high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, a Listeria monocytogenes infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women, according to a news release from the grocery chain.

Meijer said no illnesses have been reported. The recall affects products sold in Meijer stores between Sept. 27 and Friday. Items should either be returned to the store or thrown out.
