Elgin man convicted of selling cocaine near church
An Elgin man on Monday was convicted of planning to sell cocaine about 200 feet from a church, prosecutors say.
A jury convicted William M. Ingram, 30, of the 0-99 block of Poplar Creek Drive late Monday of unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver within 1,000 feet of a church; unlawful possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver; unlawful possession of a controlled substance; and driving on a suspended license.
Elgin officers saw Ingram pull into a parking lot on the 500 block of Tollgate Road sometime after 8 p.m. June 20, 2014, according to a news release from the Kane County state's attorney's office Tuesday. Ingram was on parole at the time, and he was driving on a suspended license with a warrant out for his arrest, according to the release.
During a police search, officers found Ingram had 1.7 grams of cocaine and $47,700 cash. He admitted to police he was driving to a business less than a mile from a church to sell drugs for money, prosecutors said.
Ingram's bond was revoked after his conviction, and he remained at the Kane County jail Tuesday evening.
He is due back in Kane County court Sept. 29, when he could be sentenced to between six and 30 years in prison, according to the release.
Meanwhile, Ingram faces separate first-degree murder charges in connection with the April 30, 2015, death of Elgin man, Devonte Turner. Those charges also will be addressed at his Sept. 29 court date.
