Dist. 300: Two confirmed cases of mumps at Jacobs High School

Two cases of mumps have been confirmed and a third is suspected at Jacobs High School in Algonquin, according to a letter posted to the District 300 Facebook page.

In a letter to parents, Superintendent Fred Heid said the district received notification from the Kane County Health Department on Thursday confirming the second case; he added that test results for the third case would come early next week. The first case was confirmed Monday, according to an earlier district Facebook post.

 

All three students had been vaccinated, according to Thursday's letter, which added that, upon review, the district found the two students with confirmed cases shared one class. The third student does not share classes or activities with the other two.

Mumps is a viral infection characterized by swelling and tenderness of one or more salivary glands. It is uncommon in students who are up-to-date with measles, mumps and rubella vaccinations. Symptoms include fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness, loss of appetite and swollen glands in front of or below the ear or under the jaw.
