Elk Grove Park District opening Community Athletic Fields amenities

The Elk Grove Park District has finished a $2.2 million project to replace a concession stand, restrooms and maintenance buildings at the Community Athletic Fields on the southeast corner of Arlington Heights Road and Devon Avenue.

The park district plans to host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Saturday to unveil the first improvements at the outdoor recreation complex since it opened in 1993.

The project consists of two buildings totaling 2,800 square feet connected by a translucent roof intended to provide shelter during poor weather. On hot summer days, the park district will turn on two misters to cool down the space, officials said. The shade structure covers a 900-square-foot patio.

While no changes are being made to the fields themselves - four baseball/softball diamonds and two football/soccer fields - those who play there will have a new space to gather between games.

The east building has restrooms and a concessions area. The west building will provide storage space for maintenance equipment necessary to maintain the grounds.

The park board hired Wight & Co. to complete the work. The project was being funded through the park district's corporate fund balance.
