Romney headlining state Sen. Rutherford event

Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney is headlining a fundraiser for state Sen. Dan Rutherford, who's interested in running for Illinois treasurer.

A downstate Republican, Rutherford says he plans to announce when the General Assembly is on Easter break that he will form an exploratory committee.

Romney is expected at a Tuesday fundraiser in Chicago to support Rutherford, his former Illinois campaign chairman and a Chenoa Republican.

The treasurer's job could open up because Illinois Treasurer Alexi Giannoulias, a Democrat, has formed an exploratory committee to look at a run next year for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Roland Burris.

In 2006, Rutherford ran, and lost, against Jesse White for Illinois secretary of state.
