Even personal safety can be exciting
The Indian Trails Library has two events coming up Sunday and Monday that deal with personal safety.
Matt Wilhelm, a BMX world champion and X-Games medalist, will be at the library from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday.
He'll perform stunts while also educating residents about bicycle safety and leading a healthy lifestyle.
From 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Operation Safety will make its way to the library. The program promotes driving safety for teens.
The Illinois State Police will provide a golf cart simulator of a drunken driver, a rollover simulator and a demonstration of what happens with a 5 mph crash.

Rock out: The Buffalo Grove Park District hosts its Battle of the Bands contest from 1 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Willow Stream Park.
The winners advance to the regional competition in July, and that winner will go to the Illinois State Fair on Aug. 16.

To secede or not to secede: Last week, when Palatine officials and Todd Stroger were going back and forth about a meeting regarding Cook County's recent tax increase, Wheeling Interim Village President Patrick Horcher had his own words to say about a possible secession of the Northwest suburbs from Cook County.
He said he'd support the idea of seceding if someone took a strong stand and was organized about it, but he hasn't seen that happen yet.
"I do feel that it's taxation without representation," he said. "We have one guy who represents us on the county board, and he gets overridden."
For now, Horcher said he's going to sit back and see how a community meeting between Stroger and suburban residents - now planned for 7 p.m. June 16 at Harper College - will play out.
"A meeting is not going to solve this problem," Horcher said. "What it will take to solve this problem will not happen. I think (secession backers) will need to have a couple confirmed allies, and it has to maintain its momentum."
Gas bill: The cost for Buffalo Grove police coverage is included in the bill that Lincolnshire has sent Dan Seals, the Democrat running for the 10th Congressional District seat, for the gas event - some would call it political grandstanding - that snarled traffic in Lincolnshire a couple of weeks ago.
Buffalo Grove had three traffic officers at the event for 90 minutes, and will be paid $306 to go along with Lincolnshire's plan to bill $68 per hour.
Seals invited motorists to a gas station and offered to pay the difference between $4.14 and $1.85 a gallon for gas. The lower price was the cost of gas when his opponent, incumbent U.S. Rep. Mark Kirk, a Republican from Highland Park, was first elected eight years ago.
