Pastor celebrates 17 years as leader

The Rev. Martin. G. Stuck will celebrate 17 years as pastor at the Evangelical Community Church in Palatine on May 12, which also happens to be his birthday.

Now, don't go asking him his age. Let's just say Stuck embodies the adage that you're as young as you feel and he's feeling pretty darn spry.

Stuck, an amiable and quick-to-laugh gentleman, has been married to his wife, Lorry, for more than 50 years. They have four children, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The pair share their musical skills with the congregation -- Lorry on piano and Martin on organ.

Since he started leading the small, independent church at 312 E. Wood St. in 1991, Stuck has seen the building be just about completely renovated.

His fondness for his congregation shines through as he reminisces about his time there. Stuck said the strength of the congregation comes from its sense of volunteerism and feeling of family.

"It's a smaller congregation where people are not lost in the crowd. It's more of a family and a very loyal family," he said. "I think our church has a quiet contentment. I'm very thankful for what I've been able to do. It's been a real joy to serve here."

Stuck said there are definitely benefits to serving at one church for so long.

"You know people very, very well and they know you. And you learn to trust each other," said Stuck, who grew up in Zion.

Stucks' many years in ministry at various congregations have included ups and downs -- exciting opportunities and some trials and tribulations. Stuck said the main lesson he has learned is to lean on the Lord.

"Don't go into the ministry unless you are willing to count on the Lord big time," he said. "I have to remember that I'm serving God. He's my boss."

He marvels at how God has met the needs of his small Palatine congregation.

"God has provided what we need and answered prayer," he said. "We are looking toward the future with bright hope."

The church holds services at 10:45 a.m. Sundays. For more information, call the church at (847) 934-1130 or visit the Web site at www.palatineecc.org.
