See quilts on display at historic farm house

"Stitches in Time" will focus on quilts and their history at 7 p.m. April 29 at the Historic Farmhouse, 301 N. Lies Road, Carol Stream.

Members of the Carol Stream Historical Society have made exceptional efforts securing items for display at the society-sponsored quilt show. One more item, representative of our village's rich history, will be added to the collection.

Thanks to the efforts of local quilt group Seams Like Fun, the Farm House will even boast a reproduction of a 19th century quilt depicting a barn raising. Making the quilt even more of a treasure is the fabrics used to create this one-of-a-kind item. The material is representative of fabric that would be found circa the time the farm house was built in the late 1870s.

In celebration of this special presentation, the community is invited to attend the show and, if they like, display and share the history of their quilts just as historical society member Barbara O'Rahilly will be doing.

When O'Rahilly retired in 1995 from her position as superintendent of the Carol Stream Park District, she was presented with a quilt made from T-shirts representative of the ones worn through the years by park district staff.

"We welcome anybody interested in displaying their quilt," O'Rahilly said.

Call her at (630) 665-0686 to be included in the program.

The Seams Like Fun quilt group began in 2003 with area ladies who wanted an outlet for their individual and charitable quilting endeavors. On average, they boast 15 members, with most being Carol Stream residents.

In addition to the group's national quilt undertakings, each year the quilters make and donate a quilt for an area charitable organization fundraiser.

According to member Laura Hays, "We are happy to donate these quilts to help the organizations with their fundraisers."

An RSVP is not necessary to attend the program, however, if you are interested in learning about the Carol Stream Historical Society or Seams Like Fun quilt group, give O'Rahilly a call at the above number.
