Bid on bargains at Troop 32's annual auction fundraiser

"Going once, twice, three times -- it's yours" will be the phrase of the evening at Boy Scout Troop 32's auction fundraiser set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Post 76, 570 S. Gary Ave., Carol Stream.

Bidding begins at 7 p.m. for the 25th annual auction. There will be bargains galore, including hotel, golf course and car maintenance packages and several restaurant coupons.

As in years past, attorney Robert McNees of Carol Stream has donated his expertise in preparing a will.

"You never know what you will find," said Sally Halberson, auction chairwoman.

The Carol Stream Fire Department has again donated its Fire Fighter For A Day. This prize will allow a child 10 years and older with an adult to spend a day with firefighters, beginning with a ride from their home on a fire truck.

"My son had a ball," said Halberson of her son's experience as a Fire Fighter For A Day.

Bargain hunters might consider the white elephant/silent auction portion of the event, keeping in mind that one man's trash may very well be another's treasure.

An example would be the pair of lamps that were auctioned years ago and found to be worth a considerable amount more than what was paid. I've even purchased antiques at one-third their value. You can't beat that.

Now, if your fancy is for something delicious, there will be a bake sale, too. Many items from the Scout families' kitchens will be sold and auctioned off. And if past years are any indication of what will be offered up, there are sure to be lots of goodies.

As he has done so faithfully from the start, Del Miller, former post commander and Scout liaison, has volunteered his time as auctioneer. Miller and the Post 76 group always ensure an evening filled with lots of laughs.

What better way to chase away the winter doldrums?

Keep in mind that this has been planned as an adult only evening. There will be a cash bar and plenty of snacks. So, call the sitter and invite your friends and neighbors to join you.

Proceeds will benefit the troop, allowing the boys to attend summer camp, work toward their badges, purchase equipment and defray other expenses.

Halberson noted that this fundraiser has allowed the boys many more Scouting opportunities than they could have otherwise afforded without the funds.

Donations will be accepted, including gently-used household items. For details, call Halberson at (630) 665-9708.
