Market Place raises funds for historical society's work

Crafts, flea market items and antiques, as well as vendors' items, will be displayed for the first time this year for shoppers from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 15 at the third annual Market Place at Carol Stream's Historic Farmhouse, 301 W. Lies Road, just west of Hampe Park.

"We've expanded it (the market) a little bit," said Barb O'Rehilly, historical society committee member.

The committee anticipates the spaces will fill quickly with 10-by-10 feet spaces available for only $20 each. Those interested in renting space can call Barb Tuman at (630) 665-8219 for an application or visit www.carolstreamhistorical.com.

This year's event will include a special treat for the children with a visit from Dave Fleming, an entertainer who has been an attraction in Carol Stream's 4th of July Parade and at the village's Town Center. His one-hour program will delight the children with magic, juggling, comedy and stilt walking at 1 p.m.

The society's limited-edition keepsake Christmas ornament, featuring a picture outlining the farmhouse, will be on sale for $5 and only available during this event.

With the Carol Stream Historical Society's motto of "Preservation -- Restoration and Education," the Market Place and upcoming Elegant Tea allow the committee to continue to do just that.

This year's Elegant Tea will take guests back in time as historical society members Carole Ellermier portrays Mrs. Stark, owner of the farmhouse, and Gail Sanders portrays Stark's friend, Bertha Palmer of the Palmer House Palmers of Chicago.

The tea will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at the farmhouse. Seating is limited and tickets are $15 per person. For reservations or details, call O'Rehilly at (630) 665-0686.

In keeping with the theme, guests are invited to wear their hats and gloves. O'Rehilly added new members are always welcome, regardless of how long they have resided in Carol Stream.

The membership fee is $5 per year. Monthly meetings are at 7 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of the month at the farmhouse.
