Sound check: Soul Asylum, Dishwalla bring nostalgic faves to the Genesee

Get ready for a night of alternative rock classics when '90s radio faves Soul Asylum and Dishwalla head to Waukegan next Thursday for a concert at the Genesee Theatre. Soul Asylum, best known for the hits “Black Gold,” “Runaway Train” and “Somebody to Shove,” headlines, joined by Dishwalla, who first hit national airwaves with “Counting Blue Cars” before following up with the lushly beautiful “Angels & Devils.”

The Blooze Brothers are back
The Midwest's popular Blues Brothers tribute - The Blooze Brothers, featuring Glenview performer Kevin Pollack as Jake - makes a stop at Crystal Lake's Raue Center in a fitting homage to the spirit, energy and soul of Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi's classic act. Friday's performance was postponed from January, so original tickets will be honored for the event.

Saltwater Tap at Golden Dagger
Saltwater Tap - the funky, folksy brainchild of Garen Hudson, Taylor Vos and Cait Arq - heads to Chicago's Golden Dagger this weekend with a collection of intricately structured jams evoking the joys, stories and deep conversations that are hallmarks of only the best parties. The young band joins Stranger and Embahn at the Lincoln Park venue Friday.

Another side of Ryan Argast
Instead of hunkering down during the last two years, Ryan Argast of Marina City kicked into overdrive, releasing new projects with the long-running West suburban band and also hammering out creative new songs on his own. This weekend, the Oswego soul-pop singer unleashes his new solo EP, “Twice on Sundays,” with a release party at Chicago's Chop Shop. Argast will be joined by Chicago artists Manny Torres and Danielle Juhre for a powerful evening of music.

Kali Masi at Gman
Last year's release “[laughs],” which explored the influence relationships play on people's psyches, carried punk band Kali Masi (featuring McHenry's Sam Porter and Naperville musician John Garrison along with Chicagoans Tim Roark and Anthony Elliott) through a tour of the Southern U.S. and into Europe. On Saturday, the band kicks off a new tour as they join Carpool and Latewaves at Gman Tavern for a night of emo and rock.
