Live theater returns to Chicago with Liza and Judy revue

Live theater returns to the Chicago area this weekend when the Judy Garland/Liza Minnelli revue, forced to close earlier this spring in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, resumes with new staging and audience seating in accordance with Illinois safety guidelines.

“Judy & Liza – Once in a Lifetime: The London Palladium Concert – A Tribute” starring Nancy Hays as Judy and Downers Grove native Alexa Castelvecchi as her daughter Liza resumes Friday, July 24, at the Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago.

A re-creation of Garland's 1964 London concert featuring the then-18-year-old Minnelli, the show includes physically distanced versions of the duets “Get Happy/Happy Days” and “Chicago,” along with solos including “Over the Rainbow” and “The Man That Got Away.”

Hays and Castelvecchi created new blocking for the production which unfolds over 70 intermission-free minutes on the Greenhouse's main stage.

Audience members must wear face coverings and congregating in the lobby will not be allowed. Capacity will be limited to 44 to allow for physical distancing. No cash transactions will be conducted, and ticket purchases will be online.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through Aug. 9. Tickets are $25, $20 for seniors and students. They're available online at greenhousetheater.org.
