Broadway stars announced for Lyric's '42nd Street'

The Lyric Opera of Chicago is bringing Broadway star power to its spring 2020 production of "42nd Street."

Tony Award winner Faith Prince ("Guys and Dolls," "Disaster!") is set to star as the tempestuous Broadway diva Dorothy Brock. Tony nominee Norm Lewis ("Porgy and Bess," NBC's "Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert!") has also signed on to play the taskmaster director Julian Marsh who utters the famed Act II line, "You're going out a youngster but you've got to come back a star!"

The Tony Award-winning 1980 Broadway musical is inspired by 1930s Depression-era Hollywood films showing backstage life and elaborate production numbers by choreographer Busby Berkeley. The score features well-known songs by Harry Warren and Al Dubin like "Shuffle Off to Buffalo," "Lullaby of Broadway" and the title song.

"42nd Street" plays Chicago from May 29 to June 21, and arrives via Paris in director/choreographer Stephen Mear's production that originated in 2016 at the Théâtre du Châtelet. Tickets are $37-$219, and are on sale now by calling (312) 827-5600 or visiting lyricopera.org.
