Start a new tradition at Elgin's Winter Wonderland

Get ready for downtown Elgin to transform into a “Winter Wonderland” from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7.

Hosted by the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin, Winter Wonderland will take place in the heart of downtown Elgin, along Spring Street and DuPage Court, and will feature a variety of free activities, including s'mores and chestnut roasting, live music performances, carriage rides and live Nativity performances by First United Methodist Church.

New this year will be live ice sculpture carving by Johnson Studios Ice Sculptures from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Festival Park, 132 S. Grove Ave.

This year's theme of creating and celebrating holiday traditions during Winter Wonderland is meant to showcase the diversity found all across Elgin.

Community groups will have the opportunity to showcase their holiday traditions, such as Kwanzaa and Hanukkah celebrations, as well as folkloric dancers performing on the main stage.

Celebrations aren't limited to just Spring Street alone. A Winter Market will be taking place at IMAGO, 216 Prairie St., featuring various local vendors, and the public can stop by various downtown Elgin businesses that will be hosting activities, sales and other promotions inside their shops.

A new addition to Winter Wonderland this year will be the tree decorating activity. Eight local schools will have the opportunity to decorate their own tree during the event, and then donate the tree to a family in need.

All trees, stands and tree skirts will be provided by Jimmy John's downtown Elgin location.

Immediately following Winter Wonderland's conclusion at 6 p.m. will be the city of Elgin's official tree-lighting ceremony at Festival Park.
