Weekend at play: Light up your weekend with Illumination, Holiday in the Park

A holiday fest at Six Flags in Gurnee, the Illumination light show at Morton Arboretum in Lisle and the return of Polar Express in South Elgin kick-start the holiday season in the suburbs.

Practically perfect?

Take the kids or grandkids to see a Walt Disney classic on stage as Drury Lane Theatre presents "Mary Poppins," based on P.L. Travers' stories and adapted from the 1964 film. Mix thrills with winter chills as Six Flags Great America offers up its expanded second winter season called Holiday in the Park starting this weekend at Six Flags Great America, 1 Great America Parkway, Gurnee. $54.99-$79.99; $59.99 for people under 48 inches tall. Luminous outdoors

Holiday train

Ride to the "North Pole" to meet up with Santa when The Polar Express train rides, based on the beloved Christmas children's book by Chris Van Allsburg, return Sunday at the Fox River Trolley Museum, 35W003 Route 31, South Elgin. $35-$50.
