Dining out: From March Madness to bacon and banjos

Gearing up for March Madness? City Works in Schaumburg and Old Town Pour House in Oak Brook and Naperville will be showing all the NCAA tournament games now through April 8 on the restaurants' TV walls and handing out branded fan towels while supplies last. Plus, City Works will be cooking up a special shareable plate called The Works. The four-pound dish combines Tater Tots, pepper jack cheese sauce, cornmeal-battered cheese curds, pickled jalapeños, beer-battered shrimp, avocado, cannellini beans, Pico de Gallo, chicken tinga, sunny-side up eggs and cilantro lime crème for $25. Stan's Donuts opens in Oakbrook Terrace

Doughnut lovers will be happy to know that Stan's Donuts & Coffee is opening a new location at 6 a.m. Saturday, March 23, in Oakbrook Terrace. To celebrate, the first 100 patrons will receive a free glazed donut, one of which will be the gold-leafed Golden Donut (giving the lucky guest free donuts for life). Plus, they're more freebies Saturday, including a free glazed donut with purchase from noon to 2 p.m., a free coffee with purchase from 2 to 4 p.m. and a $10 gift card with purchase from 4 to 6 p.m. The new location will have a drive-through window, a 16-seat outdoor patio and 43 seats inside. Hours are 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Bacon and banjos

If you're in the mood for some bluegrass or jazz with your weekend brunch, Arlington Heights' Hey Nonny is the place to be. The bistro's new special brunch menu, which is available from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays, features dishes such as shrimp and grits, berry and yogurt trifle, cast-iron pancake, corn masa waffles, and a pear and fig grilled cheese sandwich from executive chef Jay Ruff. This week, Aaron Smith & Jess McIntosh perform at the Bluegrass Brunch starting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23, and the Apasionado Duo performs during the Jazz Brunch at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, March 24. Who doesn't love brunch, especially when it means you can try small bites of a variety of dishes? Bonefish Grill is hosting just that at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 23. Try dishes like the crabcake rancheros, seasonal avocado toast, greens, egg + ham with crispy Brussels sprouts, Johnnycakes, traditional eggs Benedict and French toast with seasonal berries. Murder-mystery & martinis

Like suspense, solving puzzles and the 1920s? Get dressed up in your best flapper gear for Martini Room's 1920s Mystery & Martini Party at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23. The improv-inspired event starts off with the murder of a top crime boss in Chicago. Guests will get to play the role of suspects, detectives or witnesses. Register early to get your assigned character sketch, instructions, summary and a secret password for entry to the speakeasy-themed lounge. National Cocktail Day

The newly renovated D.O.C Wine Bar in Lombard is celebrating National Cocktail Day - Sunday, March 24 - with a specialty drink called the #Spritz. A mix of Grapefruit Botanicals Vodka, fresh squeezed grapefruit and prosecco, it will be available all day long on Sunday. Also coming up is D.O.C's free monthly wine tasting, which takes place from 5 to 7 p.m. on the last Wednesday of the month (March 27). 'Ocean to Plate'

Catch 35 Naperville hosts an Alaskan Halibut "Ocean to Plate" food and wine tasting event starting at 6 p.m. Monday, March 25. Chef Eddie Sweeney will discuss tastes, cooking techniques and butchery during the event, which costs $35 per person. Try dishes such as Alaskan halibut chowder, Alaskan halibut ceviche and Alaskan halibut almondine. On Thursday, March 28, the restaurant will host a Go Beyond the Glass wine dinner featuring Steve Grass from Pali Wine Co. Expect food pairings from chefs Eddie Sweeney and Jesus Pasindo such as duck confit with Pali, Alphabets, Pinot Noir; grilled Atlantic salmon with Pali, Huntington, Pinot Noir; and Australian lamb chops with Tower 15 Winery, Cabernet Sauvignon. Santo Cielo's first beer dinner

Naperville's Santo Cielo welcomes Miskatonic Brewing Company for the restaurant's first beer dinner starting with a meet and greet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 27. Brewery co-founder Josh Mowry will discuss the beers and specially designed menu pairings for the four-course meal, which begins at 6:30. Highlights include andouille and potatoes paired with the Belgium wheat beer Little Gray, blackened jumbo scallop paired with the Brut IPA Pyromancer, duck leg confit paired with the Oud Bruin beer The Paramour, and for dessert pan de elote (bourbon dulce de leche) paired with the Hazy IPA River Fiend. Viva La 'Rita

Even if our weather doesn't want to cooperate right now, Bahama Breeze in Schaumburg is bringing a little island sunshine to the suburbs with Viva La 'Rita - a celebration of tequila and limes running now through April 7. Try one of two new drinks: the color-changing Mystic Margarita is a blend of pineapple and lime juices and tequila served with a prickly pear and passion fruit-infused rum sidecar, and the Coconut-Pineapple Margarita combines cream of coconut with pineapple and lime juice, which is garnished with toasted coconut flakes and a pineapple wheel. Also new to the menu is the Tequila Sunburn Glazed Salmon, featuring grilled salmon basted with Tequila Sunburn glaze and topped with pineapple-mango salsa.
