Dining out: Restaurants go pink for breast cancer awareness

October is breast cancer awareness month, and this is the 11th year for The Lynn Sage Foundation's In Good Taste campaign. To honor it, more than 175 Chicago-area restaurants and bars will donate proceeds from select dishes, desserts and drinks to help raise awareness and support for local breast cancer research during the month of October.

Participating restaurants include Francesca's, Harry Caray's Italian Steakhouse (Lombard, Rosemont), Holy Mackerel (Lombard), Old Town Pour House (Oak Brook, Naperville), Tuscany (Oak Brook, Wheeling), Weber Grill (Lombard, Schaumburg), Rosebud and many more.

Sue's Tech Kitchen

Engage your mind and your appetite at the interactive Sue's Tech Kitchen, a STEM-fueled pop-up coming to the Streets of Woodfield in Schaumburg Friday through Sunday, Oct. 5-7. Kids of all ages can make 3D-printed s'mores, take part in chemistry experiments such as making edible helium balloons, eat liquid nitrogen cereal balls, create treat-dropping drones and binary bracelets and much more. The Works Kitchen debuts

Schaumburg's GameWorks recently unveiled its new chef-driven restaurant concept, The Works Kitchen, which was created by chef Tony Leitera who most recently collaborated with Guy Fieri on operating and expanding his branded locations. The Works Kitchen's menu takes a modern American spin on bar classics. Menu items include hand-stretched artisanal pizzas; buffalo-fried cauliflower; spiced and seared yellowfin tuna sashimi; the signature Works burger (a grilled cheese-stuffed 1½-pound double burger topped with Sam Adams barbecue sauce and bacon) and the Impossible Burger. Also on offer are hearty milkshakes, such as the Frozen Brunch (a vanilla milkshake with bacon, a Belgium waffle and maple syrup); the Movie Theater (a chocolate milkshake with red licorice, caramel popcorn, M&M's and whipped cream); and the Unicorn (a rainbow sherbet milkshake with rock candy and cotton candy topped with a sugar cone). Naperville's City Gate Grille is hosting an Oktoberfest beer tasting on the patio from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5. City Barbeque is opening its fifth Chicago-area location in Vernon Hills at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 8. Mystery History Food Crawl

For something different, consider going on St. Charles' Mystery History Food Crawl from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. Enjoy appetizers and drinks while learning about St. Charles' ties to U.S. history during this 21 and older event. It starts at the St. Charles History Museum, 215 E. Main St., then moves on to local restaurants including the Filling Station, El Puente, Vintage 53 and Club Arcada. A representative from the museum or park district will share haunting stories that took place in each of the locations. Goose Island beer dinner

Interested in learning more about beer? Pinstripes in Oak Brook is pairing with Goose Island Beer Co. for a four-course beer dinner from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. A representative from Goose Island and a chef from Pinstripes will lead diners through the food and beer pairings, which include pork belly bruschetta with American IPA Next Coast, squash and grains with Oktoberfest, Cooper's duck with Cooper's Project #1 (a bourbon barrel-aged scotch ale), Death By Chocolate with Madame Rose (Belgian style brown ale) and Bourbon County Brand Stout 2017.
