Why a workout buddy or an exercise class keeps you on track

Having trouble staying on track with your fitness routine?

If so, you're definitely not alone.

Most of us at some point struggle with the quality, consistency, and enjoyment of our workouts.

This is why having a workout partner, or exercising in a group can be so beneficial. Rather than tackling a challenge alone, you team up, and as they say - there is strength in numbers.

Here are five reasons why exercising with at least one other person can mean the difference between success and failure.

Accountability.

If you're not accountable to anyone, and you miss a workout, you're the only one who knows about it.

For most people, that's not enough accountability. Having a partner or being part of a group forces you to be accountable to someone other than yourself.

Motivation and encouragement.

It's a good feeling when you know someone is looking out for your best interests.

A good workout partner cannot only encourage you to do better, but can motivate you by their actions - especially if they have qualities or abilities that you respect. Each of you can feed off one another and do more as a team than as individuals.

Assistance and feedback.

It's always good to have someone watching your form, spotting you on certain exercises, and just making sure that your exercise routine is safe.

Feedback from a workout partner or group gives you an outside perspective on what they see as your strengths and weaknesses, which could be very different from your own perspective.

Competitive spirit.

Sometimes working out alone starts to get boring, when in fact, your workouts should be fun!

Exercising in a group setting can really bring out your inner competitor. Friendly competition doesn't have to be taken seriously or cause anxiety, but it could give you just enough push to make exercise fun again.

Lifestyle change.

Surrounding yourself with people who share similar health interests is a key step in setting new habits.

If you're looking to stay healthy for the long haul, realize that you must embrace healthy influence. Having a workout partner with similar interests or taking part in a group fitness classes with participants who share similar goals can become a constant in your life that keeps you moving in the right direction.

So if you're looking for a way to rejuvenate your workouts, finding support in a partner or group may be just what you need.
