From the Editor: Building on a strong foundation of Daily Herald leadership

I first walked into the Daily Herald newsroom more years ago than I care to count. Fresh out of college, I was young and eager. Editors John Lampinen and Bill Hill dubbed me "Rook" - short for rookie - and the nickname stuck even after I was no longer the new kid in the newsroom.

With more than 35 years of experience, I'm far from a rookie these days. But the belief in local journalism I brought with me to my first day at the Daily Herald remains stronger than ever as I take on the role of managing editor.

The responsibility is humbling. Yet I am lucky to follow in a long line of extraordinary managing editors, including our current Executive Editor Jim Baumann. My job is to build on the strong foundation he shaped and nurtured over the past nine years. And I aim to do just that.

For starters, we are adding a climate change reporter later this year through a partnership with Report for America. It's part of our commitment to covering this crucial issue and its effect on our region in far greater depth. Readers can expect to read about global warming's impact on our weather, our water supply and our way of life.

We will continue covering the pandemic, tracking trends and numbers, but we will be looking to broaden coverage in other areas as well with more award-winning watchdog columns and in-depth political reporting.

Our paper is committed to strong coverage of community news, sports and local events. Thanks to the Paddock family and the dedicated people behind our now employee-owned company, we've had the privilege of reporting on the suburbs for 150 years.

We start many news meetings at the Daily Herald with a single question: How can we be useful to our readers? We want to help you navigate and enjoy life in the suburbs - our home as well as yours. And we are always looking for story ideas to further that goal. If you have one, drop me a line at lminer@dailyherald.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you for supporting local journalism. It matters.
