America should lead on climate action

The Daily Herald recently ran an article, "China offers few new climate targets ahead of UN conference." This is an opportunity for America to lead on climate.

We want the world looking to us, not China. Bold action from the U.S. would raise our stature across the globe and provide credibility on other issues, like security and human rights. We should target cutting our emissions by 50% by 2030. This would inspire the world to follow.

The best action we can take on climate would be to institute a fee on carbon and couple it with a dividend that paid the proceeds back to every American household. A carbon cash-back payment helps American working families maintain their standard of living while making the adjustments needed to fight climate change. Most American families would come out ahead here, and we can't make 50% by 2030 without a price on carbon.

Write your representatives in Congress - I'll be writing Rep. Underwood - and Senators Durbin and Duckworth. Write President Biden, too. Urge them to support a carbon fee and dividend and to set a goal to cut 50% by 2030.
