His cane was able, but Sox weren't
The magic Northbrook's Rob Holt was able to exert with his cane Sunday night (all in good fun) helped rally the White Sox to a Game 3 win in the ALDS. Unfortunately, the magic wore off Tuesday.
But still, a nice sports memory
It was nice to see Holt instantly added to White Sox lore with the national attention he and his cane received from the Fox Sports cameras. Now, if only Rob could learn to hit a Lance McCullers curve ball for us.

Two who are creating their lives
Congratulations to August Graham and David Koraciewicz who recently became Eagle Scouts in Arlington Heights Troop 132. That's quite an accomplishment.
Petty the fool
Many are, for whatever personal reason, still not interested in the COVID vaccine. Their choice, and then there's this: Man at the local pharmacy to get a second dose going on a profanity-laced, clipboard-throwing tantrum directed at the pharmacist before storming out because ... he had to fill out a form. Odd reason to forgo a shot at safety.
Kudos to Mayor Marathon
Congratulations to Arlington Heights Mayor Tom Hayes for completing his 35th marathon - Chicago on Sunday. He'd also been qualified (again, as he has many times) for Boston on Monday, but field size limits kept him out.
Truly honor the fallen
While reliably accurate numbers are hard to pinpoint, it is clear that COVID-19 is by far the number one cause of police deaths in the line of duty. It has killed scores since the pandemic started. All of us have a duty to get vaccinated and to wear masks indoors.
Don't put that card in your spokes
An autographed Michael Jordan basketball card just sold for $2.7 million. Sure, it's only one of 23 in existence and it includes a swatch of his 1992 All-Star jersey, but $2.7 million? That's about $83.61 per MJ-point scored. You could add 42 more teachers for that for a year. Or 46 more police officers. Or one $2.7-million editor.
Lucky dog
Heaven, a mixed-breed canine from St. Charles, has been named the 2021 winner of People magazine's "World's Cutest Rescue Dog Contest." But seeing how happy she and her owner, Jackie Rakers, are in photographs, it's clear that Heaven was a winner long before the contest.
Getting those home projects done?
Seen around the suburbs: Contractors' vans everywhere, working on home projects. Driveways, stone work, roofs, interior remodeling, everybody's got something. The continuing demand is crazy, but homeowners are the lucky ones. It's the last hurrah for 2021; book now for 2022?
An honor long overdue
Last week, 93 veterans from Illinois took part in the state's first all-women honor flight, thanks to OperationHerStory, which was started by veteran Ginny Narsete of Lisle. Hopefully it's the first of many more flights. Thank you for your service.
