Challenging status quo

The Schaumburg Township trustee election affects as many people as park district, mayoral and village trustee elections, but there is no coverage of Schaumburg Township trustee elections.

For your readers, here is some pertinent information about this election. Schaumburg Township has had one Democratic trustee in its 150 years of existence. The job of a township is to provide services for its citizens, including seniors and those dealing with economic hardship. The current trustees turned down an opportunity to host a COVID testing site, fail to follow COVID safety recommendations during trustee meetings and obstruct communication and transparency to residents.

Most egregiously, the board adopted the highway commissioner's budget, which included a 22-fold increase - over $30,000 - in printing and postage. This money was used to send a "public service flyer" which prominently displayed a picture of the highway commissioner - who is the husband of one of the trustees - while he was running for state representative. Shortly thereafter, the road district tax levy was increased 5% at his request.

Schaumburg Together has a slate of well-qualified, knowledgeable, energetic people who are challenging the status quo at the township. Their initiatives include engaging with the community by having meaningful, effective communication and creating a strategic plan for dealing with COVID.

I urge all to vote for Matthew J. Steward, Robert N. Fiorio, Lauren Saternus and Demetrious Gibson on April 6 or in early voting
