Endorsements: Euker, Weider, Bobrowski for Lake Zurich trustee

Lake Zurich village Trustee Jim Beaudoin's decision not to seek reelection after a pair of arrests the past two years means the village board will welcome at least one new member after April's election.

We think that's the right number. Incumbents Mary Beth Euker and Greg Weider both have earned reelection.

Euker, an attorney seeking her second four-year term, brings legal knowledge and a long history of community involvement to the panel. She's taken a pragmatic approach to her role and has shown a willingness to let public opinion guide her decisions.

Weider has worked his way up the ranks in Lake Zurich, serving on the village's parks and recreation advisory board, before being appointed to the village board in 2016 and winning his first full term in the 2017 election. We like his balanced approach to downtown development and focus on updating the town's aging infrastructure.

Choosing a third candidate to recommend is more of a challenge. Dan Bobrowski, Eric Dubiel and Michael Paulus all are qualified.

We give an edge to Bobrowski. as a member of the incumbents' Lake Zurich Forward slate - along with incumbent Village President Tom Poynton - we worry about maintaining diversity of thought on the board. But Bobrowski clearly did his homework before deciding to run. He knowledgeably addresses the village's strengths, understands its challenges and is forward-looking on matters like technology.

Dubiel and Paulus are sharp critics of current leadership - and in Dubiel's case, Poynton in particular. While contrarian viewpoints can be healthy for a village board, with the ongoing challenges of the pandemic, a board pulling in the same direction seems best. We endorse Euker, Weider and, in hopes he will bring his own voice to the panel, Bobrowski.
