Leader in this crisis is no Winston Churchill

Donald J. Trump again displayed his ignorance of history when in Michigan he compared himself to Winston Churchill leading the British through the Nazi bombings in WWII. (Daily Herald, 9/11/20).

Mr. Trump and followers, please note Churchill did not lie to the British people, he told them the truth. He didn't "downplay" the danger that they were facing because he was afraid, they would panic. He trusted them to do what needed to be done.

He said, "We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender…"

If Trump would have followed Churchill's example and told America the truth when he knew of the great danger of the virus, as Winston Churchill did, perhaps hundreds of thousands of American lives would not have been sacrificed on the altar of his re-election ambition.

Don't doubt it: Helpful police are still there

I took my car for its emission test. All went well, but when I tried to peel off the sticker to put it on my car, the whole backing came off and it was no longer adhesive. It wouldn't stay on now. What to do?

I drove to the Elgin police building. There was a notice: "CLOSED. Any report should be emailed ..., etc."

I rang the bell. A young uniformed officer came out. With nimble fingers she separated the layers, walked with me to my car and attached it.

When I was young, decades ago, we were taught that Uncle Policeman was our helpful friend. Therefore, it saddens me that the police are badmouthed every time I open a newspaper.

Believe me, the helpful policeman/woman is still here.

The bottom line

We can gather, make signs, protest and march. Nothing will change unless we vote.
